Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm is a disease which mainly occus when there is weak area in the aorta, the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body which results into the weakening of a part of the aorta, the main artery of the body. Abdominal aortic aneurysms most often involve the infrarenal aorta , or that portion of the blood vessel that lies below the takeoff of the arteries to the kidneys ( renal arteries ). In much rarer situations the blood gets out through a hole in the wall of the aorta and this is called a false or pseudoaneurysm.
Aneurysm are very uncommon in patients below 20 years of age. They are most common in older patients. Aneurysm are rare in childhood and adolescence. These aneurysms are not the same as the congenital aneurysms that usually occur in the arteries of the brain and which are one of the causes of stroke. An aneurysm is a weakening of the wall of a blood vessel. An aortic aneurysm is a general term for any localized dilatation or aneurysm of the aorta, usually representing an underlying weakness in the wall of the aorta at that location.
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm is a medical condition which is associated with old age and hypertension results in death in nearly 80% of cases. An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a weakening of the wall of the major artery leading from the heart down to the abdomen causing sudden death. Surgery can repair the weakened wall of the aorta before it bursts. This is complex, specialized surgery. Aneurysm was defined as maximum aortic diameter of 3 cm or more. Annual re-scanning took place if the diameter was 3 - 4.4 cm, and at three-monthly intervals if it was 4.5 - 5.9 cm. Aneurysms come in different shapes and sizes. Sometimes they are sausage shaped and sometimes they are balloon shaped. Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) represent a degenerative process of the abdominal aorta that is often attributed to atherosclerosis; however, the exact cause is not known.
Here are the list of
Aneurysm Signs and Symptoms
The most common symptom of a brain aneurysm is a severe headache. There are many symptoms of a brain aneurysm and each person with an aneurysm may not experience the same symtoms. Some of the other symptoms are:
How Abdominal aortic aneurysms is Diagnosed?
Abdominal aortic aneurysms disease is diagnosed on the basis of its causes and symptom. It includes history and physical examination. Examination of the abdomen may reveal a "pulsating" mass. The pulses in the groin may be diminished. Blood tests (blood counts, chemistry, and kidney profile) will be done. Abdominal ultrasound is frequently utilized to reveal the aneurysm.
Treatment of Abdominal aortic Aneurysm
Treatment will require emergency surgery to repair the aneurysm before rupture occurs. A Vascular Surgeon is the expert in the management of this problem.
The overall mortality rate for this disease is approximately 45%. Patients who are medically stable on admission to the hospital have a much better prognosis (mortality rates as low as 5%). Unstable patients may have a mortality rate in the range of 60 to 80%.
