Causes of Insomnia

The common causes of Insomnia :

  • Primarily life events such as new job or school, deadlines or exams, or death of a relative or close friend
  • Include chronic pain syndromes from any cause (eg, arthritis, cancer), advanced COPD, chronic renal disease (especially if on hemodialysis), chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia
  • Circadian rhythm sleep disorders cause insomnia at some times of the day and excessive sleepiness at other times of the day. Common circadian rhythm sleep disorders include jet lag and delayed sleep phase syndrome .
  • excessive physical or intellectual stimulation at bedtime
  • nicotine, alcohol, caffeine, food, or stimulants at bedtime
  • Insomnia occurs more frequently in people over the age of sixty and the prevalence of insomnia may be 40% or higher for women over the age of 40.

Symtoms of Insomnia

Some are comman symtoms of Insomnia :

  • Frequent bowel movements
  • Unexplained weight loss (often despite increased appetite)
  • The sleep disturbance does not occur exclusively during the course of Narcolepsy, Breathing-Related Sleep Disorder, Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorder, or a Parasomnia.

Treatment of Insomnia

The most importent treatment of Insomnia :

  • The treatment of psychophysiologic insomnia begins with education about the sleep problem and appropriate sleep hygiene (elements of good sleep hygiene are described in Patient Education )
  • Guided imagery and meditation teach the patient how to focus on neutral or pleasant targets in place of racing thoughts.
  • Some claim that large doses of vitamin B12 help normalize the onset of sleepiness, but little is known of the effectiveness of the treatment.
  • Modafinil is approved in the USA for treatment of Shift - work sleep disorder , which shares some characteristics with DSPS, and a number of clinicians are prescribing it for DSPS patients.
  • Prescription medication.
  • Over the counter medication.

To have quick treatment, it is essential to search out the root cause of the disease first. Until real cause is searched out, Insomnia may go on afflicting the patient.
