Urticaria is characterised by sudden appearance of pink, annular, itchy weals which usually disappear over a few hours. In the acute fonn weals may cover most of the skin surface but in the chronic fonn only a few weals may develop each day. Swelling of tongue, larynx, airways and inside and around mouth and tongue may occur in some cases. Hives are produced by blood plasma leaking through tiny gaps between the cells lining small blood vessels in the skin. They are most often on the legs and other uncovered areas such as forearms and face but sometimes they are scattered in small groups all over the body. The disease is also known as nettle-rash as the rash of urticaria resembles the sting of a nettle. The disease may be acute, Chronic, or recurrent. Hives or "welts" are usually raised, flat bumps on the skin that are more red around the edge than in the middle. Approximately 10-20 percent of the population will have at least one episode in their lifetime. Histamine is a chemical released from cells in the skin called "mast cells" which lie along blood vessels. Allergic reactions, chemicals in foods, or medications may cause hives; sometimes it is impossible to find out the cause. Papular urticaria may clear up on holiday or on moving house. One or several members of the family may be affected. Occasionally the eruption can clear up for years and then recur unexpectedly. It is not associated with any internal complaint and is never a serious disease. Angioedema is characterized by deep swelling around the eyes and lips and sometimes of the genitals, hands and feet. It generally lasts longer than urticaria, but the swelling usually goes away in less than 24 hours. Occasionally, severe, prolonged tissue swelling can be disfiguring. Rarely, angioedema of the throat, tongue or lungs can block the airways, causing difficulty breathing.
