Patients listed for surgery in the Edmonton area can expect a phone call or voicemail from the Alberta Health Services (AHS) Surgical Waiting List team.

In a press release Thursday, AHS said patients will be asked to confirm that the health authority has contacted the correct person. The surgical waiting list management team will request the last four digits of each patient’s personal health number and part of their date of birth to confirm their identity.

The waitlist status will not be affected if a person hangs up or does not call back.

The health authority reminds patients that it will never ask for financial information or any other information other than that mentioned above during these calls. If a phone call or voicemail asks for additional information, such as a social insurance number or cooking information, do not provide it or return the call.

The initiative is part of AHS’ Surgical Recovery Plan, aimed at reducing waiting lists for elective scheduled surgeries. The first phase of this pilot project in the Edmonton area reduced waiting lists by 5.6%.
