Insomnia

In some cases tense mental conditions like worries, tension, fear, jealousy, attachment and aversion are the root cause of Insomnia. Insomnia is characterized by an inability to sleep and or to be incapable of remaining asleep for a reasonable period. Insomniacs typically complain of being unable to close their eyes or "rest their mind" for more than a few minutes at a time. A comprehensive history and physical examination are essential to determine the etiology of the insomnia. By definition, insomnia is "difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep , or both." Although most of us know what insomnia is and how we feel and perform after one or more sleepless nights, few seek medical advice. Intermittent insomnia occurs off and on and can be attributed to a number of emotional and physical factors. Therefore, having each patient define what he or she means by insomnia is essential.

Insomniacs typically complain of being unable to close their eyes or "rest their mind" for more than a few minutes at a time. Both organic and nonorganic insomnia Lack of sleep caused by insomnia is linked to accidents both on the road and on the job. These include difficulty falling asleep, sleeping too lightly, being easily disrupted with multiple spontaneous awakenings, or early morning awakenings with inability to fall back asleep. Some simple changes in your daily routine and habits may result in better sleep.

Causes of Insomnia

The common causes of Insomnia :

  • Primarily life events such as new job or school, deadlines or exams, or death of a relative or close friend
  • Include chronic pain syndromes from any cause (eg, arthritis, cancer), advanced COPD, chronic renal disease (especially if on hemodialysis), chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia
  • Circadian rhythm sleep disorders cause insomnia at some times of the day and excessive sleepiness at other times of the day. Common circadian rhythm sleep disorders include jet lag and delayed sleep phase syndrome .
  • excessive physical or intellectual stimulation at bedtime
  • nicotine, alcohol, caffeine, food, or stimulants at bedtime
  • Insomnia occurs more frequently in people over the age of sixty and the prevalence of insomnia may be 40% or higher for women over the age of 40.

Symtoms of Insomnia

Some are comman symtoms of Insomnia :

  • Frequent bowel movements
  • Unexplained weight loss (often despite increased appetite)
  • The sleep disturbance does not occur exclusively during the course of Narcolepsy, Breathing-Related Sleep Disorder, Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorder, or a Parasomnia.

Treatment of Insomnia

The most importent treatment of Insomnia :

  • The treatment of psychophysiologic insomnia begins with education about the sleep problem and appropriate sleep hygiene (elements of good sleep hygiene are described in Patient Education )
  • Guided imagery and meditation teach the patient how to focus on neutral or pleasant targets in place of racing thoughts.
  • Some claim that large doses of vitamin B12 help normalize the onset of sleepiness, but little is known of the effectiveness of the treatment.
  • Modafinil is approved in the USA for treatment of Shift - work sleep disorder , which shares some characteristics with DSPS, and a number of clinicians are prescribing it for DSPS patients.
  • Prescription medication.
  • Over the counter medication.

To have quick treatment, it is essential to search out the root cause of the disease first. Until real cause is searched out, Insomnia may go on afflicting the patient.
