Angioma - Symptoms and Treatment

Angioma are benign tumors and made of small blood vessels. They usually appear at or near the surface of the skin . They may appear anywhere on the body and are not considered as dangerous. Whenever they are removed, it is done for cosmetic reasons. Angioma is neither dangerous nor contagious. The exact cause for angioma is unclear but it could possibly be an inherited condition. It is found in ninety percent of the females and around eighty percent of them are affected by it before they attain the age of twenty. Some of the different types include spider angiomas, cherry angiomas, and angiokeratomas. Cherry angiomas and are due to aging and do not have any known significance. Spider angiomas are more common in childhood and during pregnancy, and a few can appear on anyone. When present in large numbers, the may warn of liver damage. Angiokeratomas are an overgrowth of blood vessels and skin cells. They can be treated with electrodessication , l iquid nitrogen or laser. All three types of treatment have similar amounts of discomfort and usually give a good cosmetic result. The dermatologist will recommend the most appropriate method if you desired treatment. Electrodessication consists of touching the skin with an electric needle and destroying the blood vessels, Liquid nitrogen is a cold gas that is sprayed on the skin with a spray gun or applied with a cotton swab. Laser uses a beam of concentrated light. Angiomas sometimes recur after treatment.

Causes of Angioma

Common causes and risk factor's of Angioma include the following : -

  • Alcoholic liver disease , causes spider angiomas.
  • It may also be possible by an inherited condition.
  • Cherry angiomas may bleed profusely , if injured.
  • Pregnancy .
  • Angiomas are not dangerous or contagious.
  • Cirrhosis of the liver - causes spider angiomas.

Symptoms of Angioma

Some common Symptoms of Angioma :-

  • Bright red.
  • Smooth.
  • Angiomas are generally painless and harmless .

Treatment of Angioma

  • Liquid nitrogen is a cold, liquefied gas that is sprayed on the skin .This works by freezing and destroying the tumor of blood vessels.
  • Surgical excision may also be used for the treatment of angioma.
  • Both types of treatment usually result in a good cosmetic result.
  • In an acute condition, the treatment can be achieved by Laser surgery.
  • May be used to hide angiomas.
  • Angiomas can be treated with electrodesiccation. This is done in the doctors office. It consists of touching the skin with an electric needle and destroying the blood vessels that make up the tumor.
  • Angiomas do not need to be treated unless they bleed or are bothering you.
