Sebaceous Hyperplasia - Symptoms and Treatment

Sebaceous hyperplasia is a common, benign condition of sebaceous glands in adults of middle age or older. Sebaceous Hyperplasia is a skin disease that affects the patients face. Lesions of sebaceous hyperplasia are benign, with no known potential for malignant transformation, but may be associated with nonmelanoma skin cancer in transplantation patients. Sebaceous hyperplasia occasionally also occurs on the chest, areola, mouth, and vulva. Sebaceous hyperplasia appears as small yellow bumps up to 3 mm in diameter. There are often prominent blood vessels. Sebaceous hyperplasia is the term used for enlarged sebaceous glands seen on the forehead or cheeks of the middle-aged and elderly. Close inspection reveals a central hair follicle surrounded by yellowish lobules. It is important to understand that this condition is not dangerous to the patient and will not seriously endanger them. The patient will start to notice small growths. As described before it isn't dangerous but it can be embarrassing for the patient as they will suffer a big confidence knock and will not want to go outside as much as they usually would. Lesions can be single or multiple and present as slightly white, flesh or yellow colored, small papules on the face, particularly the nose, cheeks and forehead. Causes of Sebaceous Hyperplasia

Common Causes of Sebaceous Hyperplasia :

  • Run in families.
  • Widened sebaceous duct.
  • Exposure to sun.
  • An increased number of basal cells..
  • Contagious.

Symptoms of Sebaceous Hyperplasia

Some common Symptoms of Sebaceous Hyperplasia :

  • Acne.
  • Papules.
  • Dryness.
  • Seen on the face as yellowish.
  • Enlargement of the sebaceous gland.

Treatment of Sebaceous Hyperplasia

Some common Treatment of Sebaceous Hyperplasia :

  • A biopsy may be necessary if concern exists that the lesion is a basal cell carcinoma.
  • Oral isotretinoin are also effective in clearing some lesions after 2-6 weeks of treatment.
  • Therapeutic options include photodynamic therapy , cryotherapy , cauterization or electrodesiccation, topical chemical treatments , laser treatment , shave excision, and excision. Complications of these nonspecific destructive therapies include atrophic scarring or transient dyspigmentation.
  • A tretinoin : is a gel or cream that is applied to the affected area of the body part. It is very useful for the fast recovery from disease.
  • Extensive or disfiguring, oral isotretinoin or, in females, antiandrogens,
  • Individual lesions may be removed by light cautery, diathermy or laser vaporization.
  • Accutane it is a powerfull drug and is very effective in curing this disease.
  • Cosmetic procedures including minor surgery and liquid nitrogen freezing are also helpful.
