Cystitis is more commonly seen in women. Urinary tract infections may be caused by altered pH, certain general diseases like diabetes mellitus, AIDS etc also predispose to reduced immunity and increased cystitis. In certain women a condition known as Honeymoon cystitis is seen. It occurs due to post coital breakage of hymen after marriage. Infection ensues and both partners have to be treated for this problem. Cystitis may also be seen in other problems of urinary tract and kidneys. Glomerulonephritis, renal tuberculosis, polycystic kidneys etc. may also result in cystitis as one of their symptoms. Cystitis usually begins when bacteria enter the urinary tract through the urethra, the tube through which urine exits your body. From there, bacteria adhere to the bladder wall, and begin to multiply. Glomerulations (pinpoint bleeding caused by recurrent irritation) often appear on the bladder wall. Hunner's ulcers are present in 10 percent of patients with IC. Some people with IC / PBS find that their bladders cannot hold much urine, which increases the frequency of urination. Narrow tubes called ureters carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder, a triangle-shaped, muscular chamber in the lower abdomen. Like a balloon, the bladder's muscular, elastic walls relax and expand to store urine and contract and flatten when urine is emptied through the urethra.

Cystitis is the inflammation of the bladder . The condition primarily affects women, but can affect all age groups. Pain may change in intensity as the bladder fills with urine or as it empties. It causes burning sensations during urination and a frequent need to urinate. Symptoms may include an urgent need to urinate (urgency), a frequent need to urinate (frequency), or a combination of these symptoms Cystitis usually begins when bacteria enter the urinary tract through the urethra, the tube through which urine exits your body. From there, bacteria adhere to the bladder wall, and begin to multiply. Unlike inflammation of the bladder caused by bacterial infection (cystitis), which is associated with urinary tract infections (UTI) and usually treated with antibiotics, no infectious agent has been found in IC. The usual treatment for cystitis is antibiotics. You can take a number of steps to help prevent cystitis and other UTIs. A stiff bladder can't expand as urine fills it. In some cases, the walls of the bladder may bleed slightly. A few people get sores in the bladder lining.
