Several types of viruses cause this highly contagious disease, commonly called the flu. Domesticated birds may become infected with avian influenza virus through direct contact with infected waterfowl or other infected poultry or through contact with surfaces (such as dirt or cages) or materials (such as water or feed) that have been contaminated with the virus.

Anyone can get flu and the more close contact a person has with people who have the virus, the more likely they are to get it. About 10-20% of people in the United States get the flu every year, and more than 200,000 are admitted to a hospital for complications related to the flu. Each year roughly 20,000 Americans die from these complications. Most of these deaths occur in those older than 65 years.

Herbal Medicines and Natural Home Remedies for Flu

Drink lots of fluid to prevent dehydration.

Stay home and rest for day or two.

Avoid sitting indoor. instead breath plenty of fresh air while sitting in a garden or verandah.

Use a heating pad to warm. tired and aching muscles.

Soaking the feet in hot water will also help in relieving a headache or nasal infection.

Back massage also helps in activating the immune system. thereby enhancing the body's defence mechanism to fight flu.

Vitamin C and Zinc supplements also help to a certain extent in alleviating the associated symptoms of coughing and sneezing.

Occasionally a brisk walk or a steamy shower is helpful in clearing nasal congestion.

Gargling with. warm water mixed with rock salt. leaves of shahtoot (Morus alba). Jamun (S. cumini) and tea leaves helps to soothe an irritated throat.
