Eczema is a distinct inflammatory response of the skin secondary to a number of exogenous and endogenous factors. The term eczema is broadly applied to a range of persistent or recurring skin rashes characterized by redness, skin edema , itching and dryness, with possible crusting, flaking, blistering, cracking, oozing or bleeding. Kids who get eczema often have family members with hay fever, asthma , or other allergies . Some scientists think these children may be genetically predisposed to get eczema, which means characteristics have been passed on from parents through genes that make a child more likely to get it. For some, the disease will improve with time. For others, however, eczema is a chronic or recurrent disorder. Although it can occur just once, it usually occurs on and off throughout life, or lasts the entire lifetime. Eczema can be triggered by just about anything coming in contact with the skin. It occurs in atopic people, who are extra sensitive to skin irritation. Dry, flaky skin appears over red, inflamed areas, causing intense itching and burning. Dermatitis is a common condition that isn't life-threatening or contagious. But, it can make you feel uncomfortable and self-conscious. A combination of self-care steps and medications can help you treat dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis, commonly referred to as eczema, is a chronic skin disorder categorized by scaly and itching rashes. Most kids get itchy rashes at one time or another. But eczema can be a nuisance that may prompt scratching that can only make the problem worse Eczema can be caused by a number of different factors, and may result in just a small patch of skin being affected, but can affect skin anywhere on the body. Other types of eczema trouble us at different times of life for a number of reasons. The most common cause of eczema is atopic dermatitis , sometimes called infantile eczema although it occurs in infants and older children For some, it is work related, whereas others develop a specific allergy to something to which they are exposed at home or work. In general, eczema is fairly common approximately 1 in 10 people in the world will be affected by it at some point in their lives. People with eczema also may have asthma and certain allergies, such as hay fever. For some, food allergies (such as allergies to cow's milk, soy, eggs, fish, or wheat) may bring on or worsen eczema. Allergies to animal dander, rough fabrics, and dust may also trigger the condition in some people.

Herbal Medicines and Natural Home Remedies for Eczema

Musk Melon is one of the most effective remedies for eczema. Musk melon should be taken three times a day for at least forty days. The juice of the fruit is also useful for local application in chronic and acute cases of eczema.

The pulp and the skin of mango should be simmered in a cup of water for half an hour. This should then be strained and applied as a lotion to the affected areas several times daily.

Raw vegetable juices. especially carrot juice in combination with spinach juice is helpful in the treatment of eczema.

Safflower oil is beneficial in the treatment of eczema. Two tablespoon of this oil should be taken daily.

The green leaves of finger millet is valuable in chronic eczema. The fresh juice of these leaves should be applied over the affected areas. Two tablespoons of molasses should be taken twice daily in a glass of milk. Improvement will be noticeable within two weeks time.

The patient should take a diet consisting of seeds. nuts, grains, vegetables and fruits. He should avoid tea, coffee, alcoholic beverages, all condiments, sugar, white flour products, denatured cereals and highly flavoured dishes.

Sunbathing early in the mornthg is very beneficial. A light mudpack applied over the sites of the eczema is also helpful. In cases of acute eczema, cold compress or cold wet fomentations are beneficial.

Certain liquids have been found useful as washing lotions foreleaning the affected parts:' These include water 'in which neem leaves have been boiled, rice starch water obtained by decanting cooked rice etc. The patient should get as much freshairi as 'possible. Restrictive clothing should not be worn. Drinking plenty of water and taking bath twice or thrice a day is recommended.
