Tonsillitis is a condition in which there is inflammation of palantine and lingual tonsils or salivary glands. Sometimes inflammation of pharynx is confused with the inflammation of tonsils. The disease is caused by virus or bacteria especially Streptococcus pnewnoniae. Haemophilus influenzae. Tonsillitis may present as a mildillness or a severe fulminating illness predisposing to high fever and great prostration. Tonsillitis is extremely common in children and young people but it can occur at any age. The characteristics of the disease are pain in the throat and trouble swallowing. Nearly all children in the United States experience at least one episode of tonsillitis. Because of improvements in medical and surgical treatments, complications associated with tonsillitis, including mortality, are rare. Sometimes, tonsillitis reoccurs, and may cause difficulty breathing. If this occurs, your doctor may recommend taking them out. Most cases of tonsillitis go away without antibiotic medication.Tonsillitis can spread from person to person through throat or nasal fluids - this includes saliva, hand contact or airborne droplets. The incubation period (the period between picking up the infection and symptoms starting to appear) is usually between two and four days.

Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils in the mouth and will often, but not necessarily, cause a sore throat and fever . The tonsils become enlarged and red, and can be coated with a yellow, gray, or white substance. Tonsillitis refers to the inflammation of a tonsil - the large, fleshy, oval masses of tissue that lie in the lateral wall of the oral pharynx on either side of the throat. The tonsils' job is to catch germs before they cause infections in the throat, mouth, or sinuses. Usually, tonsils do their job well. When the main site of infection is within the tonsils they swell, become red and inflamed and may show a surface coating of white spots. In general, young children tend to get viral tonsillitis, and older children and adults get bacterial infections. When tonsillitis strikes, the first line of treatment is typically self-care or antibiotics. Surgery is seldom necessary, unless tonsillitis recurs often or it interferes with breathing or swallowing.
