Brand Names

  • Plenaxis

General Information

Abarelix is a type of medicine called a gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist that lowers the male hormone testosterone in your blood. It is primarily used in oncology to reduce the amount of testosterone made in patients with advanced symptomatic prostate cancer for which no other treatment options are available. Other treatments for prostate cancer should be tried before treatment with abarelix is prescribed. Early stage prostate cancer is often treated with surgery or radiation therapy and less often with cryoablation. Advanced stage prostate cancer may be treated with other drugs that decrease the production of testosterone. Abarelix may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. In some cases, the use of abarelix has resulted in serious allergic reactions. An allergic reaction may occur after any injection of the medication, including, but not limited to the first dose. Abarelix is highly bound to plasma proteins and shows an apparent volume of distribution of over 4000 L, suggesting extensive distribution throughout the body.
