Isradipine

General Information

Isradipine is in a class of drugs called calcium channel blockers. This drug may cause dizziness, headache and lightheadedness especially during the first few days. Isradipine relaxes your blood vessels, which makes it easier for your heart to pump and reduces its workload. Isradipine is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). It is not known whether isradipine passes into breast milk. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. You may also experience diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, blurred vision, muscle cramps, weakness, swelling of the hands or feet or flushing. These effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication. Isradipine does not cure high blood pressure, but it will help to control the condition as long as you continue to take it. It may take several weeks to develop its full effect.

Isradipine Dosage

  • The usual starting dose is 2.5 milligrams, 2 times a day, either alone or in combination with a thiazide diuretic drug.
  • After a 2- to 4-week trial, your doctor may increase the dosage by 5 milligrams per day every 2 to 4 weeks until a maximum dose of 20 milligrams per day is reached.
  • Side effects may increase or become more common after a 10-milligram dose.

Side Effects of Isradipine

  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Unusually fast or slow heartbeat.
  • Mild dizziness.
  • Nausea, vomiting.
  • Swelling of your legs or ankles.
  • Chest pain.
  • Excessive tiredness.
  • Upset stomach.

Warnings and precautions before taking Isradipine

  • Do not take a double dose of this medication.
  • Do not stop taking isradipine suddenly even if you feel well. If you stop taking isradipine, your condition could become worse.
  • Ttell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to isradipine or any other drugs.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had heart, liver, or kidney disease or a history of gastrointestinal obstruction (strictures).
  • Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
  • If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking isradipine.
  • Do not chew, divide, or crush the tablet.

Overdosage

  • If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
  • Symptoms of an isradipine overdose include dizziness, weakness, chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, an unusually fast or slow heartbeat, coma, slurred speech, and confusion.
