General Information

Docosanol belongs to the family of medicines called antivirals. Docosanol topical is a smooth, white cream that dries clear. It won't sting or burn and it has no medicinal smell or taste. Cosmetics, such as lipstick, may be applied over docosanol topical. Antivirals are used to treat infections caused by viruses. Usually they work for only one kind or group of virus infections. The dose of topical docosanol can be different for different patients. Topical docosanol is used to treat the symptoms of herpes simplex virus infections around the mouth. Although topical docosanol will not cure herpes simplex, it may help relieve the pain and discomfort and may help the sores heal faster. This medication does not prevent cold sores or fever blisters from occurring nor should it be used to treat genital herpes or shingles. Docosanol topical is not approved for use by children younger than 12 years old. Do not share docosanol topical with anyone. Sharing may spread the infection. No serious side effects are expected with docosanol topical treatment.

Docosanol Topical Dosage

  • The dose of topical docosanol can be different for different patients.
  • For adults and adolescents: Apply to the affected areas, five times a day until sore is healed.
  • For children under 12 years of age: Use and dosage must be determined by your doctor.

Side Effects of Docosanol Topical

The following side effects of Docosanol-topical may includes:

  • Headache.
  • Swelling of your lips, tongue, or face.
  • Dryness and itching.
  • Soreness. 
  • Skin rash or increased redness.

Warning and precautions before taking Docosanol Topical

  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to docosanol.
  • Do not share docosanol topical with anyone. Sharing may spread the infection.
  • If at any time the medication is accidentally removed, re-apply it as soon as possible.
  • It is not known whether docosanol passes into breast milk. Although most medicines pass into breast milk in small amounts, many of them may be used safely while breast-feeding. Mothers who are taking this medicine and who wish to breast-feed should discuss this with their doctor.
  • Do not use this medicine in or around the eyes or on the genitalia.
  • Store docosanol topical at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze.

Overdosage

  • An overdose of this medication is not likely to occur.
  • If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

  • This medicine may be harmful if swallowed.
