Benazepril

Generic name

  • Benazepril (ben AY ze pril).

  • Lotensin.

General Information

Benazepril is in a class of medications called angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. Benazepril comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once or twice a day with or without food. This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy due to the risk for harm to an unborn baby. Benazepril works by decreasing certain chemicals that tighten the blood vessels, so blood flows more smoothly. Benazepril is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: history of an allergic reaction which included swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat (angioedema). Benazepril can interact with diuretics (water pills) and other blood pressure medicines to cause an excessive drop in blood pressure, which can result in symptoms of weakness, dizziness, and lightheadedness. If benazepril makes you dizzy or drowsy, do not take part in any activity that requires alertness, such as driving a car or operating potentially dangerous equipment.

Benazepril Dosage

  • The dose of Benazepril will be different for different patients.
  • For people not taking a diuretic drug, the usual starting dose is 10 milligrams, once a day.
  • Regular total dosages range from 20 to 40 milligrams per day either taken in a single dose or divided into 2 equal doses.
  • The maximum dose is 80 milligrams per day.

  • Headache.
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Rash.
  • Hoarseness.
  • Dry cough.
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Warnings and precautions before taking Benazepril

  • Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had kidney disease, epilepsy, ulcers, a stroke, a rheumatic disease, cerebral palsy, parkinson's disease, or a psychiatric condition.
  • Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
  • Tell your doctor if you plan to become pregnant or are breast-feeding.
  • Do not share this medication with anyone else.
  • Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to benazepril, captopril, enalapril, lisinopril, moexipril, perindopril, quinapril (Accupril), ramipril (Altace), trandolapril (Mavik), or any other medications.

Overdosage

  • Seek emergency medical attention if an overdose is suspected.
  • Symptoms of a benazepril overdose include extreme dizziness, weakness, fainting, and fatigue.
  • In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
