Haloperidol

Generic Name

  • Haloperidol.

Brand Names

  • Haldol.

General Information

Haloperidol is a neuroleptic and a butyrophenone used to control the symptoms resulting from acute psychosis, acute manic phases, schizophrenia, delirium, hyperactivity, and aggression. Haloperidol is also used in the treatment of some neurological disorders such as Tourette syndrome. In the treatment of schizophrenia, weeks or even months of treatment may be needed before a significant improvement is noted. Haloperidol comes as a tablet and liquid concentrate to take by mouth. It usually is taken two or three times a day. Haloperidol is used very effectively to treat delusions and hallucinations. There is no threat of psychological dependence on Haloperidol, but there are some side effects associated with this drug. Side effects, especially muscle spasms of the neck and back, twisting movements of the body, trembling of fingers and hands, and inability to move the eyes are more likely to occur in children, who usually are more sensitive than adults to the effects of haloperidol. Haloperidol can cause increased sensitivity to sunlight. It is, therefore, important to avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and sunlamps. Wear protective clothing and use an effective sunscreen.
