Darifenacin

General Information

Darifenacin is in a class of medications called antimuscarinics. Darifenacin is used to treat overactive bladder with the symptoms of urinary frequency, urinary urgency, and urinary incontinence. It works by relaxing the bladder muscles to prevent urgent, frequent, or uncontrolled urination. It is not known whether darifenacin will harm a nursing infant. Do not take darifenacin without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Darifenacin comes as an extended-release tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day with plenty of liquid. This medication may be taken with or without food. Darifenacin can be taken with or without food.

Darifenacin Dosage

  • The dose of darifenacin will be different for different patients.
  • For adults - 7.5 milligrams (mg) once a day.
  • For children - Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.

Side Effects of Darifenacin

The following side effects of Darifenacin may includes:

  • Dry mouth.
  • Stomach pain.
  • Weakness.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Heartburn.
  • Burning pain during urination.
  • Indigestion.

Warning and precautions before taking Darifenacin

  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking darifenacin, call your doctor.
  • Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires mental alertness until you know how darifenacin affects you.
  • You should know that darifenacin may cause blurred vision or make you dizzy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this medication affects you.
  • Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to darifenacin or any other medications.
  • Do not take two doses in the same day or a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdosage

  • In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
  • Symptoms of an darifenacin overdose are not known but might include restlessness, tremor, irritability, seizures, delirium, hallucinations, flushing, fever, nausea, vomiting, a fast heartbeat, and possibly coma.
