General Information

Abilify is a type of medicine called an atypical antipsychotic. It is used to treat schizophrenia. Abilify has caused fatal heart attack and stroke in older adults with dementia-related conditions. Stop using Abilify and call your doctor at once if you have the following symptoms: fever with stiff muscles and rapid heart rate; uncontrolled muscle movements; symptoms that come on suddenly such as numbness or weakness, severe headache, and problems with vision, speech, or balance. Abilify can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Avoid drinking alcohol, which can increase some of the side effects of Abilify. Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated. Drink plenty of fluids, especially in hot weather and during exercise. It is easier to become dangerously overheated and dehydrated while you are taking Abilify. Abilify may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. Abilify has not been tested in children or teenagers. Older adults should use the drug with caution.

Abilify Dosage:

  • Aripiprazole usually is taken once a day.
  • The usual starting dose is 10 or 15 mg once daily. The dose may be increased over time to achieve the desired effect.
  • The doctor will wait at least 2 weeks before prescribing an increased dosage.

Side Effects of Abilify:

The following side effects of Abilify may includes:

  • Rigid muscles.
  • Problems sleeping. 
  • Increased heart rate and blood pressure.
  • Lightheadedness (dizziness). 
  • Very high fever.
  • Weakness or loss of strength (asthenia).
  • Fatigue.
  • Abnormal or uncontrollable movements.
  • Blurred vision.

Warning and precautions before taking Abilify:

  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Abilify. 
  • Drugs such as Abilify can cause the body to overheat. Be cautious in hot weather and when exercising strenuously, and be sure to get plenty of liquids.
  • You should not drive or operate hazardous machinery until you know how abilify affects you.
  • Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with atypical antipsychotic drugs are at an increased risk of death compared to placebo.
  • Because Abilify tends to make some people sleepy, you should be cautious about operating hazardous machinery such as cars until you are certain the drug will not impair your ability.
  • Use Abilify with caution if you have any kind of heart or circulatory problem, take blood pressure medication, or tend to become dehydrated.

Overdosage:

  • If an overdose occurs, whether intentional or accidental, immediate medical attention is necessary. Call your doctor or emergency medical service (911).
  • Symptoms of an Abilify overdose may include drowsiness, agitation, aggression, confusion, fast, trouble breathing, feeling light-headed, Sleepiness, vomiting or fainting.
  • Canadian residents should call their local poison control center directly.
