General Information
Decofed is used to treat congestion associated with allergies, hay fever, sinus irritation, and the common cold. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any type of heart disease, certain types of fast heart rhythm problems. It works by constricting blood vessels in the nose, lungs, and other mucus membranes. By decreasing blood flow to the nose, lungs, and other areas, pseudoephedrine decreases congestion, and airways are opened up. This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Pseudoephedrine passes into breast milk however, it is generally considered safe for use during breast-feeding. Talk to your doctor before taking pseudoephedrine if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Decofed Dosage
- The dose of decofed will be different for different patients.
- For adults and children 12 years of age and older - 60 milligrams every four to six hours. Do not take more than 240 mg in twenty-four hours.
- For children 6 to 12 years of age - 30 mg every four to six hours. Do not take more than 120 mg in twenty-four hours.
- For children 2 to 6 years of age - 15 mg every four to six hours. Do not take more than 60 mg in twenty-four hours.
- For children 4 months to 2 years of age - Dose must be determined by your doctor
- Children up to 4 months of age - Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.
Side Effects of Decofed
The following side effects of Decofed may includes:
- Unusual behavior or hallucinations.
- Headache.
- Irregular or fast heartbeats.
- Restlessness.
- Nausea or vomiting.
- Sweating.
- Lightheadedness.
Warning and precautions before taking Decofed
- Do not take decofed for longer than 7 days if your condition does not improve or if symptoms are accompanied by a high fever.
- Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to pseudoephedrine or similar medicines, such as albuterol, amphetamines, ephedrine, epinephrine, isoproterenol.
- Do not take more of this medication than is recommended on the package or by your doctor.
- This drug may make you dizzy or lightheaded; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages.
- Tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking or plan to take, especially medications for diet or appetite control, asthma, or high blood pressure.
Overdosage
- If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
- Symptoms of a pseudoephedrine overdose include extreme tiredness, sweating, dizziness, a slow heartbeat, and coma.
