Choloxin

General Information

Dextrothyroxine is used to lower high cholesterol levels in the blood. The dose of dextrothyroxine will be different for different patients. Dextrothyroxine can have serious effects on the heart. It is not known whether dextrothyroxine passes into breast milk. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Dextrothyroxine has not been studied in pregnant women. However, studies in animals have not shown that dextrothyroxine causes birth defects or other problems. Side effects are more likely to occur in the elderly, who are usually more sensitive to the effects of dextrothyroxine. If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule.

Choloxin Dosage

  • The dose of dextrothyroxine will be different for different patients.
  • For adults - 1 to 8 milligrams a day.
  • For children up to two years of age - Use is not recommended.
  • For children two years of age and older - 50 to 100 micrograms (0.05 to 0.1 mg) per kilogram of body weight a day.

  • Fast or irregular heartbeat.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Headache.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Skin rash.
  • Unusual weight loss.

Warning and precautions before taking Choloxin

  • Do not stop taking this medicine without first checking with your doctor.
  • Before having any kind of surgery (including dental surgery) or emergency treatment, tell the medical doctor or dentist in charge that you are taking this medicine.
  • Do not take a double dose of this medication.
  • It is not known whether dextrothyroxine passes into breast milk. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to dextrothyroxine.

Overdosage

  • Symptoms of a dextrothyroxine overdose are unknown.
  • If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
