General Information

Histerone is a naturally occurring hormone called an androgen. Testosterone is produced in the testes in men, and small amounts are produced by the ovaries and adrenal cortex in women. Geriatric men are at higher risk for developing enlarged prostates or prostate cancer when using this medication. Histerone is used to treat conditions due to androgen deficiency, such as lack of natural testosterone, delayed puberty, and impotence. This medication is also used in women to treat breast cancer and postpartum breast pain or engorgement. It is not known whether testosterone passes into breast milk. Do not use this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. This medication may cause stomach upset, headache, and acne. These effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication. Other side effects may include increased hair growth on the face and body, male pattern baldness, anxiety, depression and pain or inflammation at the injection site. Males may experience enlargement of the breasts.

Histerone Dosage

• This medication is given by injection into a muscle as prescribed.
• The short-acting forms are given 2 to 3 times a week and the long-acting forms are usually given every 2 to 4 weeks.

Side Effects of Histerone

Some common side effects reported with this medicine include:

• Nausea or vomiting.
• Swelling of the arms or legs.
• Yellowing of the skin or eyes.
• Headache.
• Pain or inflammation at the injection site.
• Hoarseness or deepening voice.

Warnings and precautions before taking Histerone

• Do not use the brand of testosterone called histerone if you have an allergy to mercury.
• Do not use histerone without first taking to your doctor if you have cancer of the prostate.
• Do not use testosterone if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.
• If you experience a rare but serious allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives), stop using testosterone and seek emergency medical attention.
• Do not use a double dose of this medication to make a missed dose.

Overdosage

• An overdose of this medication is unlikely to threaten life.
• Symptoms of a histerone overdose are not known.
• If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
