General InformationHisterone is a naturally occurring hormone called an androgen. Testosterone is produced in the testes in men, and small amounts are produced by the ovaries and adrenal cortex in women. Geriatric men are at higher risk for developing enlarged prostates or prostate cancer when using this medication. Histerone is used to treat conditions due to androgen deficiency, such as lack of natural testosterone, delayed puberty, and impotence. This medication is also used in women to treat breast cancer and postpartum breast pain or engorgement. It is not known whether testosterone passes into breast milk. Do not use this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. This medication may cause stomach upset, headache, and acne. These effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication. Other side effects may include increased hair growth on the face and body, male pattern baldness, anxiety, depression and pain or inflammation at the injection site.
