General Information

Efalizumab is a synthetic antibody that is used for the treatment of psoriasis. It inhibits inflammation and reduces the activity of the immune system (the body's own defence system). It works in a way that is different from the other biological treatments for psoriasis. It is reserved for use in patients with severe psoriasis who cannot take drugs such as methotrexate, ciclosporin, acitretin or phototherapy. Efalizumab has not been studied in pregnant women. Efalizumab has not been shown to cause birth defects or other problems in animal studies. Efalizumab should be used with caution in pregnant women and should be used only if clearly needed. The dose of efalizumab will be different for different patients. Efalizumab appears to be well tolerated. The most frequently reported side effects included headache, nausea, chills, pain, fever and non-specific infection such as the common cold. These occurred most often after the first injection and became less with subsequent doses. The dose of efalizumab prescribed is based on body weight.

Warning and precautions before taking Efalizumab

• Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to efalizumab.
• Caution is advised when using this drug in children.
• If you are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant, or breast-feeding, you need to inform your doctor immediately as this medication could have a negative reaction to your baby or unborn child.
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
• Check with you doctor immediately if you notice an unusual bleeding or busing, black, tarry stools, blood in urine, or stools, or pinpoint red spots on your skin

Overdosage

• Seek emergency medical attention if an overdose is suspected.
• Symptoms of a efalizumab overdose may include nausea or vomiting.
