General Information

Felbatol is a very powerful antiepileptic medicine used to treat a broad variety of seizure and seizure syndrome types. Felbatol has also been known to cause fatal cases of liver failure. Warning signs of a liver problem include dark urine, loss of appetite, stomach upset, and yellow skin or eyes. Felbatol is prescribed only when other medications have failed to control severe cases of epilepsy. Felbatol is available in tablet and solution forms. Felbatol can also be used for other purposes. Felbatol when taken with certain other drugs may change the effect of the medicine. If you are taking any other drug whether prescribed or non-prescribed, food supplement or herbal drug, you should consult your doctor before taking felbatol. The common side effects related to Felbatol include disturbances of sleep, headache, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, and constipation. The side effects of the medicine may vary from person to person. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. Felbamate may increase the sensitivity of the skin to sunlight. Use a sunscreen and wear protective clothing when sun exposure is unavoidable.

Felbatol Dosage

  • The dose of felbamate will be different for different patients.
  • Whether Felbatol is taken alone or with other antiepileptic drugs, the usual starting dose is 1,200 milligrams per day divided into smaller doses and taken 3 or 4 times daily. Your doctor may gradually increase your daily dose to as much as 3,600 milligrams.
  • In children, the starting dose is 15 mg/day in 3 to 4 divided doses.

Side Effects of Felbatol

Some common side effects reported with this medicine include:

  • Swelling of face, lip, throat and difficulty in respiration.
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Weight loss.
  • Fever and soar throat.
  • Sleepiness.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Nausea and vomiting.

Warnings and precautions before taking Felbatol

  • If you are allergic to felbatol or any other similar drug, you should not take felbatol.
  • Avoid alcohol, as alcohol may increase dizziness.
  • Felbatol may cause dizziness, avoid driving and operation of heavy machineries, if you are on felbatol.
  • If you have to travel during peak hours. Use sunscreen or protective clothes to avoid sunlight as felbatol may increase sensitivity of the skin towards sunlight.
  • Children and old people should be prescribed felbatol with caution.
  • If you are taking carbamazepine, phenytoin and valproic acid, you should inform your doctor before taking felbatol.

Overdosage

  • Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences.
  • An overdose of felbatol may cause the symptoms like dizziness, diarrhea, and irregular heart rate.
  • Seek emergency medical treatment if an overdose is suspected.
