General Information

Busulfex is an alkylating agent. It works by slowing down reproduction and growth of certain white blood cells. Busulfex seems to act by interfering with the function of the bone marrow. Since the growth of normal body cells may also be affected by busulfan, other effects will also occur. Some of these may be serious and must be reported to your doctor. Other effects may not be serious but may cause concern. Some effects may not occur for months or years after the medicine is used. The dose of busulfan will be different for different patients. The dose that is used may depend on a number of things, including what the medicine is being used for, the patient's weight, and whether or not other medicines are also being taken. Drink plenty of fluids while using this medication, unless instructed otherwise.

Side Effects of Busulfex

  • Blood in urine or stools.
  • Inflammation of the mouth.
  • Fever or chills.
  • Painful or difficult urination.
  • Chest pain.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Nausea and vomiting.

Warnings and precautions before taking Busulfex

  • Do not use Busulfex if you are allergic to any ingredient in Busulfex.
  • Before starting busulfan treatment, make sure you tell your doctor about any other medications you are taking (including prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins, herbal remedies, etc.
  • Do not take Busulfex without first talking to your doctor if you are breast feeding a baby.
  • Do not use Busulfex without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.
  • Do not touch your eyes or the inside of your nose unless you have just washed your hands and have not touched anything else in the meantime.
  • Avoid contact sports or activities that could cause injury.

Overdosage

  • After taking Busulfex, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately.
  • Canadian residents should call their local poison control center directly.
  • Symptoms of overdose may include severe fatigue, persistent sore throat, fever; or easy bruising or bleeding.
