General Information

This medication is a combination of a narcotic (propoxyphene) and a non-narcotic (acetaminophen). It is used to treat mild to moderate pain. Balacet may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. Propoxyphene works by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord while acetaminophen decreases the formation of prostaglandins which relieves pain. This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Avoid alcohol because it may increase the risk of side effects. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. It is not recommended for use for long periods or in high doses near the expected delivery date because of the potential for harm to an unborn baby. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Do not take acetaminophen and propoxyphene if you suffer from depression or have suicidal thoughts. If you are younger than 18 years of age or older than 60 years of age, you may be more likely to experience side effects from acetaminophen and propoxyphene therapy.

Yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Dry mouth.
Nausea and vomiting.
Decreased urination.

Warnings and precautions before taking Balacet

Avoid alcohol while taking balacet. Alcohol can increase drowsiness and dizziness caused by the medication which could be dangerous. Also, alcohol may increase the risk of liver problems when taking balacet.
Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had kidney disease, epilepsy, ulcers, a stroke, a rheumatic disease, cerebral palsy, parkinson's disease, or a psychiatric condition.
Do not take more of this medication than is prescribed. If the pain is not being adequately treated, talk to your doctor.
Caution is advised when using this drug in the elderly because they may be more sensitive its side effects, especially drowsiness.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking balacet, call your doctor immediately.
Do not share this medication with anyone else.

Overdosage

Seek emergency medical attention if an overdose is suspected.
Symptoms of a balacet overdose include slow breathing, seizures, dizziness, weakness, loss of consciousness, coma, confusion, tiredness, cold and clammy skin, small pupils, nausea, vomiting, and sweating.
